Three Mile Island nuclear plant to help power Microsoft’s data-center needs

Microsoft has entered a contract to receive energy from the decommissioned Three Mile Island nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania through a new renewable energy project. Talen Energy, the owner of the site, will install solar panels on the land which was once home to the worst nuclear accident in U.S. history. The solar farm will generate about 180 megawatts of power, enough to power all of Microsoft’s data centers and office buildings in Pennsylvania. This contract with Talen is part of Microsoft’s larger initiative to become carbon negative by 2030. The company plans to shift all its data centers and office buildings to renewable energy by 2025.
