CFPB expands oversight of digital payments services including Apple Pay and Cash App
On March 3, 2022, U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta unsealed several documents in Special Counsel John Durham’s investigation into the origins of the Trump-Russia inquiry. The documents were related to Durham’s case against Michael Sussmann, a lawyer who previously represented the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign.
The unsealed filing was essentially a roadmap of Durham’s case against Sussmann, who he has charged with making a false statement to the FBI. The filing alleges that Sussmann shared false information with the FBI about possible links between the Trump organization and a Russian-based bank, supposedly as political opposition research.
The documents also reveal agitated exchanges between Durham’s team and lawyers representing Sussmann, who argue that Sussmann is being unfairly targeted and that Durham’s charges are an overreach.
As the contents of these unsealed documents become public, they give us further insight into the Special Counsel’s case, the rationale behind the charges, and the contentious back-and-forth between attorneys on both sides.
This case and associated investigations continue to evoke strong feelings from various parties. It remains a matter of ongoing scrutiny and debate about the appropriateness of the charges, the conduct of the FBI, the origins and motives of the allegations, and the overall integrity of the 2016 election.
