Jordan inches closer to speaker’s gavel after weekend pressure campaign

Jordan, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Ohio, has been inching closer to the speaker’s gavel as pressure has mounted on former Speaker Paul Ryan to back out of the race. Over the weekend, numerous House Republicans and some of Ryan’s colleagues voiced their support for Jordan, while at the same time Ryan allies pushed back against the idea of Jordan as speaker. The latest developments indicate that many Republicans are eager to make Jordan the next Speaker, and that Ryan is increasingly unlikely to remain the leader of the House.
