House GOP campaign arm slams Democrats in new AI-generated ad turning national parks into migrant tent cities

The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), the campaign arm for House Republicans, has released a new advertisement using AI-generated video accusing House Democrats of wanting to turn national parks “into tent cities for illegal migrants.”

The advertisement was released last week as part of a larger campaign centered around the Democratic-backed American Rescue Plan, a $1.9 trillion package of relief for the pandemic-stricken nation.

The video states that House Democrats want to give “illegal migrants” access to $200 million in aid from the American Rescue Plan. It then shows a video of tents set up next to a “National Park” sign. The ad suggests that House Democrats are intending to use the money from the package to turn America’s national parks into migrant tent cities.

The NRCC’s advertisement does not provide any evidence that Democratic lawmakers have proposed such a measure. In fact, the American Rescue Plan does not include funds for migrants or set aside resources to convert national parks into tent cities, but rather provides money for direct aid to families in need, as well as resources for expanding access to healthcare, education, and housing.

While the NRCC’s advertisement does not provide evidence to support its claims, it nonetheless serves to stoke fears about the effects of the stimulus package and to further partisan divisions.
