House Dem Leader Jeffries floats end-run around McCarthy to avert government shutdown

House Democratic Leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) is pushing a potential end-run around House Minority Leader Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) in order to avoid a government shutdown. Jeffries is suggesting passing a bill that would keep the government funded while also averting a debt ceiling crisis. The so-called “clean” continuing resolution would last only until late December, but Jeffries hopes that if Congress passes it, it will encourage Republican and Democratic leaders to work together to find a more permanent solution before the end of the year. Jeffries believes that this plan could break an impasse between Democrats and Republicans over increasing government spending that could lead to a partial shutdown next month.
