Government shutdown November deadline: What happens to Social Security payments and more

The Social Security Administration (SSA) states that Social Security payments and other critical services will continue during a government shutdown. Specifically, the SSA will continue to process and mail Social Security payments on time. Individuals will still be able to access their SSA Online accounts and submit applications for retirement, disability, and Medicare benefits. Additionally, individuals will still be able to inquire about the status of their claims and replace Social Security cards.

However, some services provided by SSA may be affected. Disability hearings scheduled during a government shutdown will be rescheduled. SSA websites, including those for employees and employers, will not be updated and some telephone hotlines will not be available.
