Viktor Orban is a Hungarian politician who has been the Prime Minister of Hungary since 2010. He is also a member of the national conservative Fidesz – Hungarian Civic Alliance, which he led between 1993 and 2000. His first term as Prime Minister was from 1998 to 2002.
Orban is known for his nationalistic and conservative policies, which have led critics to label his governance style as authoritarian. He has been particularly hardline on issues such as immigration and has increasingly exerted control over independent institutions in Hungary, such as the media, judiciary, and education sectors – moves that have angered the European Union.
His controversial policies and clear expression of Hungary’s national interests made him a unique figure among European Union leaders. Some leaders, like former U.S. President Donald Trump, view his “strongman” style of rule favorably, while others express concern about the democratic backsliding in Hungary under his leadership.
