Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, a progressive champion and two-time U.S. presidential candidate, has announced his bid for re-election. Elected to the Senate in 2006, Sanders previously served 16 years in the House of Representatives. Best known for his progressive policy proposals, including Medicare for All and a $15 minimum wage, Sanders has been a leading voice within the Democratic Party’s progressive wing.
During his presidential campaigns in 2016 and 2020, Sanders galvanized a base of supporters with his calls for economic and social justice, climate action, and universal healthcare. He has made it clear that these issues will continue to inspire his work in the Senate. Supporters and opponents alike will be watching closely in the coming year to see how the re-election campaign unfolds.
Though Sanders identifies politically as a democratic socialist, he has caucused with Democrats throughout his time in Congress, thus he is likely to run again as an Independent with heavy backing from Democratic supporters as he has in the past.
